Projects by Galway City Council have put the local authority on the shortlist for the annual Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Award for 2025.

The projects and categories Galway City is nominated for are the following:

Galway Climate Inspirations Festival – Festival of the Year

Scoil Iognáid, Ireland’s First City-Centre School Street – Urban Revival

Galway’s Climate Inspirations Festival began in 2024 and takes place annually every September to bring a creative and effective recognition to the delivery of Galway’s climate action plan using theatre, music, art, sport, and Gaeilge. Additionally, the Scoil Iognáid project is under the Safe Routes to School scheme, and the first of its kind to hold temporary restrictions on motor traffic for drop-off and pick-up times on the street outside the institution.

In 2024, the council was shortlisted for three projects and won two of those initiatives in communications for the ‘Your Council’ podcast, and in sustaining the arts with ‘Reflections – A Commemoration of the Irish Women of 1923”.

Sponsored by the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage, the award aims to highlight the work, through a variety of categories, of the council bodies around the nation to “recognise the hard work, innovation, and enthusiasm within the local government that can often go unrecognised.” Beginning in 2004, the awards fall across fifteen categories, including Local Authority of the Year, for delivered projects by local authorities.

The awards ceremony will be held in Dublin on November 27, 2025 where winners from the 26 counties will be announced.
