Galway city park awarded €60k for major upgrades

Galway City Council has awarded €60,000 in funding from its participatory budget to upgrade the green area at Sliding Rock Park.

The project was one of four bids for the €25,000 available to improve community spaces through the democratic process, which allows residents to put forward ideas and vote on priorities initiatives.

Then in 2026, an additional €40,000 was approved in the budget, while €5,000 was put towards the East area project for general enhancements, bringing the total funding available for the Shantalla park to €60,000.

The proposed upgrades include the installation of a boules/pétanque area, a French style lawn game, as well as benches, trees, and a botanic area.

City council management announced the winning project during a meeting last week, saying with the increased budget, there is more financial space to add and perfect the project completion.

“€60k gives you something that you can actually notice,” the meeting heard.

Submissions were received by mid-October and were subsequently made available for public voting, which took place in November.

The funding will not be delivered in the form of a grant; instead, Galway City Council will directly deliver the project up to the approved funding amount.

It is expected the project will be delivered by the council by the end of 2026.
