Galway bar seeks upgrade of overhead rooms with plans for new guest accommodation

A well-known Galway city bar is looking to upgrade the seven rooms above it, bringing four of them up to spec with Irish accommodation standards and turning three of tehm into guest accommodation.
The owner of Massimo’s bar in the Westend, Simon Heaslip, has submitted a planning application to retain and upgrade four existing rooms above the pub.
In addition, the application seeks the change of use of three unused storage rooms on the first floor to be converted into guest accommodation.
The application was submitted to Galway City Council on May 29.
According to the application, the improvements would focus on aligning the rooms with current building regulations, as well as spatial and safety standards.
The rooms at Over Massimo, the title of the accommodation, are listed on AirBnB by the owner and feature seven, double and bunkbed, ensuite rooms. Nightly rates range from €150 to €180.
The public are free to make submissions on the application through July 2 and the decision from the planning office is expected by July 23.
