By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

A recipient of Galway’s artist support scheme will take to the stage at the Town Hall Theatre as part of Fresh from the Fringe, a showcase of new short Irish plays.

Athenry native Moira Mahony is among the artists featured in the production series. Her original play, Threshold, will be staged alongside works by writers, directors and actors from across the country through the Elm Eye Collective.

The original productions will surround themes of life’s big questions, “What is life? What is love? And how do we move on?” the showcase description says.

Gerard O’Shea and Vera Kilgallon in Dugout by Niall McGrath, one of the plays that will be featured at Fresh from the Fringe.

“We established Elm Eye to work with like-minded actors, directors and writers to produce new work that asks big questions,” Ms Mahony said.

Ms Mahony was recently awarded funding under the 2026 Artist Support Scheme which allocated over €33,000 to 13 creatives in Galway. Additionally, she was the winner of the 2025 DLI Playwriting Award for her show Lifejacket.

Fresh from the Fringe will be on at the Town Hall Theatre for two evenings June 18 and 19. Tickets can be purchased online.
