Four councillors join forces to improve safety on busy Craughwell road

The four Galway County Councillors - Cllrs Paul Killilea (FG), Geraldine Donohue (Ind), Gerry Finnerty (FF) and Laurie Harney (FG) have pooled together a total sum of €18,000 of their discretionary funding towards new road safety measures in Craughwell.
The money will go towards new lighting on the approach to Craughwell from the Loughrea side.
The lights are being installed as far as the traffic-calming island in an effort to make the area more visible to drivers during the hours of darkness.
The project will cost €23,931, with the four councillors providing a combined €18,000 from their discretionary funding and Galway County Council making up the balance, according to Cllr Harney.
Cllr Harney has also contributed funding towards refurbishing the traffic-calming islands and signs on the approach to Labane village.
The area is due to be cleaned up this month as part of works costing €9,000.
Cllr Harney said signs on the approach from Ardrahan towards Labane are covered with grit, while the kerbing needs to be cleaned and repainted.
He said the signs on the approach from the Gort side are "not as dirty," although some of them have been "levelled by traffic".
