Fire-damaged Galway health centre to be demolished and replaced by disability centre

By Emma F. Smith, Independent.ie

The old health centre building in Ballygar, Co Galway, is set to demolished and its site become home of a new community disability centre.

Correspondence between Ballinasloe Councillor Alan Harney and HSE’s Assistant National Director for Capital and Estates, Niall Colleary, confirm the intention of creating a community disability centre at the site.

The building has been removed from the HSE land disposal list and the new services will be conducted through the HSE, Cllr Harney told the Irish Independent.

Mr Colleary said that the current building is to be demolished and the site cleared “in the coming months.”

The site has been deemed “suitably located to facilitate a development to accommodate” disability services.

The old Ballygar Health Centre on Main Street was damaged by a fire in 2021 and has become “quite an eyesore in the centre of Ballygar,” Cllr Harney said.

“We're yet to get the full details in terms of that future use by Disability Services, but it is a really good step that the site is going to be cleared and prepared obviously for that future project.”

Cllr Harney hopes the demolition will come before the Summer months to get the project rolling for residents in the town.
