Disruption expected at Galway train station as works to result in limited parking and service changes

Construction of the long-awaited pedestrian and cycle underpass at Oranmore train station, in County Galway, will take place from October 10 to 13, with significant car park closures and service changes planned.

Details were outlined at a recent Athenry municipal district meeting, where councillors were told preparatory works will begin on September 22.

Sections of the station car park will close in stages, before a full closure of the main car park from 7pm on October 9 until October 14. During this time, just 50 spaces will remain available in the access road car park.

The biggest disruption is expected over the construction weekend itself, when train services will terminate at Athenry. Replacement bus services will operate from Athenry, stopping at Oranmore before continuing on to Galway City.

Senior planner Valerie Loughnane said the aim is to “keep disruption to a minimum but obviously there is very significant work being done.”

The new underpass will include cycle lanes and full disability access — features not typically seen in earlier Irish Rail projects. Phase one of the works is expected to be completed by October 14, with tendering for the second phase due in mid-2026.

The entire project is scheduled for completion by early 2027, when Irish Rail expects increased train frequency and an improved commuter experience.
