Contractor appointed for new Galway wastewater plant set to unlock several new homes

By Emma F. Smith, Irish Independent

Construction on the wastewater treatment plant in Mountbellew, Co Galway, will begin by the end of the year as contracts for construction were signed this month.

Uisce Éireann representatives confirmed to Galway East TD Louis O’Hara that the tender process has been completed and a contractor has been appointed to deliver the Mountbellow Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The contract has been signed as part of a nationwide programme which included a €40 million allocation to Ballygar and Mountbellew.

Deputy O’Hara said the creation of the plant will pave the way for significant housing growth in the Mountbellew area.

“Planning permission has been granted for in excess of 60 houses at different sites in Mountbellew on the basis of the condition that they cannot be occupied until they are connected to the upgraded Mountbellew wastewater treatment plant,” Deputy O’Hara said.

“This underlines the urgency of progressing this scheme to ensure that these much-needed homes can be built and occupied.”

The provision of wastewater treatment plants remains at large in discussions over future housing developments in more rural areas.

In June, Uisce Éireann launched an eight-week public consultation on the Draft Galway Wastewater Strategy, which outlines the infrastructure plans for the next 54 years in Galway city, Athenry and Moycullen.

Shortly after, in July, 39 homes were approved in the townland of Treanrevagh, Mountbellew, which will benefit from the completion of the treatment plant.
