Construction of new €3.4m energy-efficient Galway fire station to begin in coming weeks

Construction of Loughrea’s new energy-efficient, enhanced fire station will begin in the coming weeks, Galway County Council has confirmed.
Burns Construction & Civil Engineering Ltd has been chosen by Galway County Council to take on the €3.4 million project which will replace the existing, half-a-century-old fire station.
The new fire station at St Lawrence’s Fields on Athenry Road will include two large bays for fire engines, one small bay fitted for a jeep or water truck, a drill yard and training rooms, as well as welfare facilities and special equipment storage.
The design of the building will be oriented towards achieving an A energy rating through efficiency measures.
Galway County Council sought a tender for construction in March 2026. The project had a delayed start as the beginning of construction was originally slated for late 2025.
In April 2026, Housing, Local Government, and Heritage Minister, James Browne delivered €328.5 million to rebuild and refurbish fire stations throughout the country. Under this allocation, the Loughrea fire station will be fully funded.
“It’s a great day for Loughrea,” Councillor Moegie Maher said. “As the site is centrally located in the town, any future development should provide appropriate infrastructure and facilities serving local people, businesses and services.”
Director of Services for Galway County Council Uinsinn Finn praised the extensive work undertaken to reach this stage - including difficult and, at times, contentious discussions during the Part 8 planning process around 18 months ago.
Construction of the new fire station is expected to take 15 months.
