Claims 85pc of those on Galway housing list are ghosting council messages – ‘It’s driving us crazy’

Frustration over lack of communication from tenants on housing lists was raised at this month’s Galway County Council meeting.
Fine Gael Councillor Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher told the chamber that almost 85pc of those on the housing and rent scheme lists fail to respond to correspondence from the local authority.
He said the messages issued by the council are designed to clarify the circumstances of prospective tenants, ensuring the lists remain as accurate as possible.
“It’s driving us as councillors, and us as a council crazy. If you are on the housing list, on the housing rent scheme list, you need to be in contact with us,” Cllr Maher said during the meeting. “Don’t come back crying to us when there is no update.”
According to the councillor, three emails and one text are sent annually to every individual on the housing lists, seeking confirmation of their status.
The executive confirmed that efforts to contact all applicants will remain ongoing, with a detailed record kept of communications throughout the year.
