Christmas time in Galway grows ‘bigger, bolder and brighter’ with festive investment

Whether you’re one to delight in the candy cane-topped huts and twinkling décor appearing across Galway, or cringe at their early arrival before Halloween has even passed, there’s no denying it, Galway is shining brighter than ever this festive season.
The city’s much-loved Christmas lights, which usher locals and visitors alike into Santa’s Market, have received a major upgrade thanks to increased investment from higher commercial rates. Though the decision to raise those rates was not made lightly, the results are already sparkling through.
“Galway’s Christmas lights are a source of joy and pride for our community, and this year we’re going bigger, bolder, and brighter,” said Mayor of Galway city, Mike Cubbard.
Already, merry messages dance across the Spanish Arch, an extended feature following the success of last year’s display. The Claddagh Basin is set to host a new signature lighting piece celebrating Galway’s maritime heritage and offering the perfect photo stop for festive strollers.
A contemporary Christmas tree will be installed at the Salthill roundabout, while the newly refurbished Small Crane will come alive with its own illumination. The investment also covers upgrades and repairs to ensure Galway’s holiday spirit lasts throughout the season.
“Galway’s Christmas lights are more than decoration; they’re a symbol of community, celebration, and economic vitality,” said Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Leonard Cleary. “This year’s expanded programme is a direct reinvestment in our city centre and neighbourhoods, supporting footfall, local pride, and the magic that makes Galway so special during the festive season.”
Night-Time Economy Officer Kate Howard has lined up a full programme of festive activities and family-friendly events to complement the city’s glow. Alongside the lighting initiative, Galway City Council will also spotlight local retailers, cafés, and market vendors through social media campaigns and promotional materials.
Keep an eye on shop windows too, as local businesses are being invited to take part in the Best Dressed Business competition, transforming their displays to capture the magic of a Galway Christmas, with extra credit for Irish-language creativity. Public voting will take place online, with recognition and prizes for the top displays.
“This investment reflects our commitment to supporting local businesses, celebrating our unique identity, and creating a festive atmosphere that welcomes everyone — from lifelong Galwegians to first-time visitors,” Mayor Cubbard added.
