Bid for new affordable homes in Galway city sees 80 applications in first few minutes

By Emma F. Smith, Independent.ie

Applications for a new affordable housing development in Galway city were snapped up within minutes of opening last week.

When the portal went live on Monday, September 8, more than 80 applicants had registered within the first four minutes. Within less than an hour, 69 fully completed applications had already been submitted.

The 14 An Tobar homes are provided by Cairn Homes. The development includes four two-bed houses and ten three-bed houses.

Figures released so far show strong demand with 185 registered applicants, and 90 have already completed submissions.

Galway City Council said the level of interest underlines both the demand for this type of housing and the ongoing need for affordable homes locally.

The application window will close at 12pm on September 29, with allocations to be made shortly afterwards. The council expects successful applicants to move into their new homes at the start of 2026.
