€5m contract signed for purpose-built housing and care development in Galway

A contract worth almost €5 million has been signed to start construction on a social housing care facility in Co Galway as part of an expansion initiative.
C&N Higgins Construction Ltd, headquartered in Oranmore, have officially signed on to begin works on 12 social homes as well as a community care home in Cullairbaun, Athenry.
The contract was signed for €4.7 million.
The social houses will consist of four one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom homes. The care facility will have five bedrooms, a community living space, and support areas.
“This project will deliver much-needed homes while also providing a purpose-built community care facility,” Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr Andrew Reddington said. “It is another important investment in Athenry and will support people to live independently in their own community.”
Director of Services in Housing Damian Mitchell said this project marks a step forward in the partnership with the Approved Housing Bodies to deliver more social, affordable and supported housing.
Studio PKA is lead architect on the project, with MMP appointed as quantity surveyors, SDS Consulting Engineers as civil and structural engineers, and CBS Consulting Engineers as mechanical and electrical engineers.
This May, the Irish Independent reported on a 28-home proposal in Athenry’s Gort Mhaoilir Estate, just 1.5km from Cullairbaun.
Galway County Councillors were previously told the scheme would include social housing however Council officials said that the proposal would first need to be approved before taken to the Housing department to be deemed social.
