Real-time noise monitors installed across eight areas of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

Residents in eight areas of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown can now see how noisy their neighbourhood is in real time following the installation of new environmental noise monitors.

The new monitoring network will provide live information on sound levels around each station, allowing residents to see how noise levels change throughout the day.

The eight monitoring stations are located at Ballyogan Crescent and Ballyogan Road in Ballyogan, Belmont Grove on Stillorgan Road, Bishop Street in Cherrywood, Carysfort Avenue in Blackrock, Kilcross Drive in Sandyford, Mountain View in Shankill and St Columbanus Place in Windy Arbour.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said the data will be used to track noise levels over time and identify areas where further assessment may be needed.

According to the local authority, the locations were identified as areas where people may be exposed to higher levels of environmental noise, particularly from major transport sources such as roads and rail.

The monitors were commissioned last month in areas identified as priority locations under the Dublin Agglomeration Noise Action Plan 2024–2028.

“Environmental noise is recognised as an important quality-of-life issue, and long-term exposure to elevated noise levels can affect wellbeing,” the council said.

“The data will also assist the Council in tracking noise trends over time, identifying areas where further assessment may be required, and informing future policy, planning and environmental management decisions.”

The plan was prepared jointly by the local authorities of the Dublin Agglomeration and was informed by Strategic Noise Maps prepared in 2022.
