New play areas open for children across three South Dublin locations

Three new playspaces have opened in South Dublin to promote “natural play” and encourage children’s physical and mental wellbeing.
One of the projects, at Fortfield Road, was developed through South Dublin County Council’s €300,000 Have Your Say initiative.
The playspaces at Balrothery, Old Bawn and Fortfield Road were opened by the local authority last week.
The council said natural play can help children develop their imaginations, while supporting their mental and physical wellbeing.
Mayor of SDCC Cllr Francis Timmons officially opens the new Balrothery Playspace with Cllr Adam Smyth, Cllr. Samantha Duff, Cllr Jess Spear, Laurence Colleran (Senior Executive Parks Superintendent) and local residents
“Play is such an important part of growing up,” Mayor of South Dublin Francis Timmons said.
“It helps children stay active, build confidence, make friends and, most importantly, have fun.
“Spaces like this also bring communities together and create opportunities for families and neighbours to connect.”
Cllr Timmons paid tribute to residents involved in the Fortfield Road project, saying: “I would like to thank the residents for bringing this project forward through the ‘€300K Have Your Say’ initiative and for helping to ensure that the children in your community have better places to play.”
