New brine facility opens in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown to improve winter road treatment

A new brine facility has opened in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown as the council moves to pre-wet salt treatment across more than 200km of priority roads.
The facility at Ballyogan Operations Centre will allow salt to be pre-wetted with brine before it is spread on the road surface, replacing the traditional method of spreading dry salt.
Cathaoirleach Barry Saul said the facility would help ensure key routes remain “safe and accessible during periods of severe winter weather.”
“The opening of this new facility is an important investment in the safety and resilience of our road network,” he said.
“By embracing new technology, we can provide a more efficient winter maintenance service while also reducing the environmental impact of our operations.”

Meanwhile, Chief executive Frank Curran of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said the facility would reduce salt consumption and carbon emissions.
“This facility represents a significant step forward in how we deliver our winter maintenance service,” he said.
“It will allow us to use our resources more efficiently, reduce salt usage and associated carbon emissions, and strengthen our operational response during severe weather.”
The facility will be used as part of the council’s winter maintenance operations during periods of snow and ice.
