‘Mindless vandalism’ – Dublin beach toilets closed after extensive fire damage

By Sylvia Omorodion, Irish Independent

Fingal County Council has condemned what it described as “severe vandalism” at a public toilet facility in South Dublin.

The toilets at Rush South Beach have been closed until further notice following “extensive fire damage” over the weekend.

The local authority said the extent of the damage is still being assessed, but confirmed the facility has suffered significant fire damage.

The toilets had been replaced in 2024 as part of recent investment in beach amenities.

In a statement, Fingal County Council confirmed the incident has been reported to An Garda Síochána and that the site will remain closed while investigations and repair assessments continue.

“Unfortunately, there has been an incident of severe vandalism at the public toilets at South Beach, Rush, and as a result the toilets will be closed until further notice,” the council said.

“The incident has been reported to An Garda Síochána.”

A council spokesperson said there is currently no estimate of the cost of the damage, with assessments ongoing.

They added that the local authority was “disappointed that this reckless behaviour will now impact the availability of a valuable public amenity for the community of Rush and visitors to South Beach as we enter the busy bathing season.”

Labour Party councillor Corina Johnston also condemned the incident, describing it as “totally unacceptable and mindless vandalism”.

“I am absolutely appalled at the totally unacceptable and mindless vandalism to the public toilets at Rush South Beach over the weekend,” she said.

“These toilets were replaced by Fingal County Council in 2024.”

“This will unfortunately impact so many people visiting the beach during the busy summer season,” she added.

Meanwhile no timeline has yet been given for repairs or reopening.
