Independent councillor Tony Murphy has been elected Mayor of Fingal following the local authority’s Annual General Meeting.

Cllr Murphy, who was first elected to Fingal County Council in 2014 and represents the Balbriggan area, succeeds outgoing mayor Tom O’Leary.

Following his election as Fingal’s 21st Mayor on Friday, he said he was “honoured” to take on the role and thanked fellow councillors for their support.

“I’m committed to working inclusively to ensure that every part of Fingal benefits from the opportunities that lie ahead,” he said.

“My priorities for the year ahead will be to build on the strong progress already made — getting more people into new homes, ensuring our infrastructure supports sustainable growth, and continuing to upgrade the facilities and services that underpin quality of life across the County.”

“When I look at Fingal today, I see a county full of opportunity,” he added.

“We are one of the fastest growing areas in the country. We are home to thriving towns and villages, world-class businesses, a strong community spirit and a young and ambitious population.”

Fine Gael councillor Luke Corkery was elected Deputy Mayor.

The AGM also saw the election of chairs for Fingal County Council’s three local area committees, which oversee the delivery of local services and address issues including roads, housing, libraries, playgrounds and environmental matters.
