Green Party names Janet Horner as candidate for Dublin Central by-election

Dublin North Inner City Councillor Janet Horner has been chosen as the Green Party candidate for the Dublin Central by-election.
Having served her constituency for the past seven years, the party say Cllr Horner has spearheaded walking and cycling initiatives, human rights and equality, and affordable housing. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Paschal Donohoe as Minister for Finance and as a Dublin Central TD.
“I want to represent the best of Dublin Central - our communities, our culture, our history, and our nature. For me, Green politics is all about communities, care, and culture, while taking on the challenges of climate change and chaos of the world around us,” Cllr Horner said in an announcement video on social media.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with the wonderful communities of this area for the past seven years as a councillor, and now I want to bring those incredible voices and perspectives to the Dail.
“I look forward to meeting with you on the doorsteps and across the city in the coming months to discuss how we can build a stronger Dublin Central and a better Ireland.”
Speaking at her campaign launch Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman described Cllr Horner as “a person who lives her values”.
“She has spoken up for the most vulnerable in her community and has been attacked for that, but this hasn’t silenced her. She sees diversity as our strength, and her proven track record in winning votes means she is a strong voice in this by-election,” he said.
Last January Cllr Horner outlined her six key priorities for 2026 and addressed many long-standing issues in need of attention across Dublin. From the need to expand installation of waste compactors in places like Stephen’s Green and Temple Bar to other parts of the city to cultural missions like the ‘Save the Complex’ campaign , Cllr Horner has been vocal about what she believes.
Other candidates in the running for the by-election include Social Democrat Cllr Daniel Ennis, Independent candidate and alleged crime boss Gerry Hutch , People Before Profit’s Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Aontú’s Ian Noel Smyth, and Independent Cllr Malachy Steenson.
While a date has yet to be determined for the by-election, it must take place within six months of Mr Donohoe’s vacancy.
