First electric wheelchair-accessible boating service launched at Dún Laoghaire Harbour

A free electric wheelchair-accessible boating service is set to allow people with disabilities to take part in harbour trips and fishing activities at Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
The new Boathub service is centred on an electric Wheelyboat V20, described as the “first electrically powered wheelchair-accessible vessel of its kind” in Ireland.
The service will offer bookable boating experiences, including trips around Dún Laoghaire Harbour and accessible fishing activities.
Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCC), Cllr Barry Saul, said the initiative would create opportunities for people who may previously have been unable to enjoy activities on the water.
“Boathub is about opening up new opportunities for people to enjoy being on the water and experience Dún Laoghaire Harbour in a way that may not have been possible before,” he said.
“This initiative will help ensure that people of all abilities can participate in maritime activities, connect with the harbour and enjoy the many wellbeing benefits that come from spending time outdoors.”

DLR chief executive Frank Curran said the project “demonstrates how innovative design can help make public amenities more accessible”.
He said: “As Ireland’s first electrically powered wheelchair-accessible vessel, Boathub represents a practical step towards creating more inclusive recreational opportunities and ensuring that our harbour can be enjoyed by as many people as possible.”
Denise Charlton, CEO of Community Foundation Ireland, said the initiative promoted inclusion and wellbeing while helping more people experience Dublin Bay.
The Boathub service will be based at Dún Laoghaire Harbour, with accessible boating experiences available to book free of charge.
