Dublin beach hit with swim ban after sewage overflow amid heavy rain

By Sylvia Omorodion, Irish Independent

A “Do Not Swim” warning has been issued for a popular north Dublin beach following a sewage overflow amid heavy rainfall in the area.

Fingal County Council is advising people to avoid entering the water at Malahide Beach after being notified of an Uisce Éireann “sewage emergency overflow”.

The warning issued yesterday is expected to remain in place for five days, with the local authority cautioning that swimming in the affected waters “may cause illness”.

A spokesperson for Fingal County Council said: “Although the location is not a designated bathing water area, it is a highly frequented beach, and this measure is being implemented as a precaution to protect public health.”

“The beach is still open to the public,” they added.

While the beach remains open, members of the public are being urged not to enter the water until the advisory is lifted.

The council said the overflow is likely to have been caused by heavy rainfall in the area.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the HSE have been informed.

Meanwhile people can check for water quality at any of the monitored bathing waters in Ireland in advance by accessing the EPA website at Beaches.ie, or r by checking the notice board at the entrance to the beach.
