Councillor warns delays at Sexton’s junction ‘cannot wait’ after sixteen accidents this year

Works to improve safety at a busy Dundalk junction “cannot wait” until 2027 as the number of accidents continues to climb, a local councillor has warned.

At the June meeting of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr. Shane McGuinness raised urgent concerns about conditions at Sexton’s junction on the Dublin Road, where there are no traffic lights for residents crossing the busy road.

He told the meeting that a child was knocked down at the junction in the past week, bringing the total number of crashes and related incidents there to 16 since the start of the year.

“People living in the estates in that area are trying to cross a very busy road with no traffic lights,” Cllr. McGuinness said. “This cannot wait.”

The Fianna Fail councillor said frustration among local residents is growing, with many directing their anger towards elected representatives and the local authority.

“People in that area are blaming us as councillors and the county council for this,” he said. “We are not doing enough. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I can’t do more, but I can’t.”

Cllr. Ciaran Fisher echoed those sentiments, saying: “We need an intervention at this junction. 2027 can’t come quick enough.”

Louth County Council had previously confirmed that works to upgrade the junction along the old Dublin Road are planned. However, the timeline for the project is currently set for mid to late 2027.
