"Viva la Quinta Brigada" - Councillor has motion passed on international flag

By Mark Forker, Donegal Daily

A Donegal County Councillor has had his motion to fly the International Brigades Flag at the Public Services Centre in Dungloe passed.

Independent councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig, got the motion approved at the meeting of the Glenties Municipal District in Dungloe on Tuesday morning.

The motion was seconded by councillor Denis McGee from the 100% Redress Party.

Mac Giolla Easbuig was unable to attend the meeting in person as he was still in London, having attended the Donegal Diaspora event organised by the Donegal County Council at the London Irish Centre on Monday.

However, he dialled into the meeting from London, where he expressed his delight that the International Brigades Flag will be flown from the council building in Dungloe.

The flag of the International Brigades represents international solidarity, anti-fascism, and support for the democratically elected Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War.

In a video he posted on Facebook, Mac Giolla Easbuig said the flag would fly to mark the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War.

"We will raise the International Brigades Flag this year for the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War. The flag will also be flown next year to mark the 90th anniversary of the death of Hugh Bonner, who was killed by fascists in Spain."
