The old Garda Barracks has been designed and is ready for construction, as part of the Repowering Buncrana regeneration project.

A funding application is due to be made under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund category one funding call in July 2026. The update came at the recent special plenary meeting of Donegal County Council.

The former Garda barracks on Saint Oran’s Road in Buncrana, which gardaí vacated in 2007, will be transformed into a modern enterprise centre. The plans include providing new office accommodation, improvements to accessibility, a new external stairway, accessible parking spaces, nature-based sustainable drainage systems, with permeable paving for pedestrian zones and asphalt surfacing for vehicular areas.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Fionán Bradley asked if the proposed pedestrian bridge would go ahead, and Mr Brendan O'Donnell, Senior Engineer at Donegal County Council, responded that it would be expensive and present complications. Highlighting that the costs and risks associated could “bring the whole project down.”

The project, which costs €1,461,745 to get ready for construction, is funded by the Rural Regeneration Development Fund (80%) and Donegal County Council (20%).
