Donegal councillor claims some families are unable to pay electricity bills

By Mark Forker, Donegal Daily

A Donegal councillor has claimed an increasing number of people have contacted him after having their electricity disconnected - because they simply cannot afford to pay their bills.

Donegal County Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig made the claim on a Facebook post on Tuesday.

He has called for the government to immediately introduce economic relief packages for families that are struggling to put food on the table.

The cost of living crisis is continuing to put pressure on a huge number of families across the North-West.

On a post on his Facebook account, Mac Giolla Easbuig said, "A high number of people are contacting me about their electricity getting cut off in their homes because they cannot afford to pay the electricity bills, and keep food on the table."

Mac Giolla Easbbuig took aim at the coalition government, who he said prioritise the interests of bankers over that of ordinary people.

"Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will continue to bailout bankers and bond holders - and will continue to see working class families suffer while they implement their ideology in the interest of capitalism," said Mac Giolla Easbuig.

Since the collapse of the interim peace deal between the United States and Iran on July 8, fighting has escalated across the Middle East.

That is expected to send global energy prices soaring once more, with the cost of living crisis across Donegal and beyond set to deteriorate further over the coming months.
