Councillor says over 100 families are going to be left homeless due to defective concrete

By Mark Forker, Donegal Daily

A Donegal county councillor has said over 100 families in West Donegal are going to become homeless as a result of the defective concrete crisis.

Denis McGee, a councillor for the 100% Redress party, highlighted the issue at the September meeting of the Glenties Municipal District in Dungloe earlier this afternoon.

The residents of West Donegal had thought they were immune from the defective concrete block crisis, but that is no longer the case.

A report has shown that approximately 109 social houses in the area are either severely impacted by defective concrete, or are showing strong signs of it.

McGee told council officials that the discovery of defective concrete coupled with a shortage of housing in the Glenties Municipal District is going to create a huge crisis in the area.

"When I first ran for the council we were told that there was no issues in this side of the county, but that's not the case anymore. Within the Glenties Municipal District area there are 109 social houses alone that are impacted.

"We need to devise a massive plan. We have to work together with all the other municipal districts to have one cohesive plan for the entire county," McGee declared.

McGee said the situation is that dire that over 100 families are going to be made homeless as a result of the defective concrete crisis.

"It really is a huge issue, and the big question is where are these 100 families supposed to go? Where are they going to go? The people that are going to be forced to move out of these houses have nowhere to go, and that's the reality. The only places available are in Bundoran.

"Are we going to have enough money, do we have a budget to fix these damaged social houses," asked McGee.

Council officials have said that the remediation scheme for social housing is expected to be unveiled by the government at the end of September.

However, McGee and some other councillors are not confident that the government will meet that deadline.
