Councillor calls for public toilets at iconic Donegal mountain

By Mark Forker, Donegal Daily

Independent councillor Michael McClafferty has pleaded with council officials to fast-track the installation of toilets at one of Donegal's most popular tourist attractions.

McClafferty has called for the introduction of public toilets on the Muckish Railway Walk.

He raised the matter at a recent meeting of the Glenties Municipal District in Dungloe.

McClafferty acknowledged that his colleague John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh has raised the issue several times in the past, but yet nothing has been done.

"We have been calling for this for a long time, and there's still no progress at all on it. Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh has been very vocal on this issue in the past, but where's still no further along.

"We need public toilets or a Portaloo on the Muckish Railway Walk, it is a hugely popular trail, that is heavily utilised all year round, but especially during the summer months," said McClafferty.

McClafferty said the lack of basic facilities is a huge disservice to the area, and believes the installation of accessible public toilets will only serve to further boost the number of visitors to Muckish.

The Dunfanaghy-based councillor thinks eco toilets could be a good option.

"At the end of the day, we need to get something tied down. We have to get something sorted ASAP, and if we can't get public toilets, or a Portaloo, why don't we consider installing an eco toilet on the Muckish Railway. We have seen them used elsewhere, and they have worked well.

"Having adequate facilities on Muckish will drive tourism, as I said, it's hugely popular, but we need something. Toilets are a necessity now regardless of where you are, and we need to have more accessible public toilets," said McClafferty.
