Council praised for swift response on offensive graffiti at Donegal beach

By Rachel McLaughlin, Donegal Daily

Donegal County Council has been praised for an urgent clean-up of grafitti which appeared on a toilet block at Warden Beach in Portsalon in recent days.

Cllr Liam Blaney thanked the council for acting quickly after messages, including “All Irish Out”, were sprayed on the walls of the public toilets.

He told a meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD today that an attempt had been made to remove the graffiti with a power washer, but the paint had proved difficult to shift.

Cllr Blaney has now called for funding to repaint the entire toilet block.

“The writing itself has been painted over. My one ask now is that we get a budget to repaint the toilets," he said.

He also said he was unhappy that photographs of the vandalism had been shared widely on social media.

“It feeds into the person who did it when they see it shared all over social media,” he said. “They feel good about themself.”

The graffiti was condemned online by Cllr Declan Meehan , who described it as “scandalous, mindless vandalism” and “wanton defacement of community facilities”.

He said there was “no place” in the community for what he called “brainless offensive messaging”.

Cllr Meehan thanked those who addressed and tidied up the graffiti and appealed to anyone with information on those responsible to contact An Garda Síochána.

His Facebook post attracted suggestions that cameras should be installed in public areas. Others condemned those responsible, while some suggested the graffiti could have been part of a “false flag operation”.
