Call for safer routes around Letterkenny school

By Rachel McLaughlin, Donegal Daily

Concerns over dangerous parking around Woodlands National School in Letterkenny have prompted a renewed call for the area to benefit from the Safe Routes to School programme.

Cllr Donal 'Mandy' Kelly raised the issue at Tuesday's meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

He said cars were blocking entrances to nearby housing estates and forcing children to walk distances along the roadside to reach their parents' cars.

Cllr Kelly said the Safe Routes to School programme would bring significant safety improvements if the school's application is successful.

"It's a fantastic programme," he said.

"Should they be successful, it would provide very safe measures, not only for the students but the parents and teachers alike."

In response, Donegal County Council said applications to the Safe Routes to School programme are made directly by schools and that it understands Woodlands National School has already applied.

However, officials said the school has not yet been selected to progress for funding.

The council stressed that the programme is administered by An Taisce and that Donegal County Council has no role in selecting projects.

Senior Roads Engineer David McIlwaine said the concerns raised at the meeting would be forwarded to An Taisce.
