Accident fears over dangerous turns carried out on Letterkenny's Four Lane

By Rachel McLaughlin, Donegal Daily

A Letterkenny councillor has called for a 'no right turn' sign at the junction of the Cullion Road and the Four Lane road after witnessing a number of dangerous manoeuvres in recent weeks.

Cllr Coyle reports driving behind an HGV on the Cullion Road in recent weeks when he saw the truck crossing over the incoming lane and the central reservation before turning right onto the outgoing side of the N56.

“About a week later I saw a car doing exactly the same thing,” he told Tuesday's meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Cllr Coyle said there was currently no sign advising drivers not to make the turn.

"That could have caused a very serious accident," he warned.

Cllr Coyle said he believed the measure would be "no big ask".

Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly, who seconded the motion, suggested that plastic bollards could be installed in addition to signage to deter motorists from turning across the N56.

Cllr Coyle also asked the council to cut the grass on both sides of the N56 Four Lane Road.

He said local businesses had raised concerns about the condition of the verges, including the growth of weeds, thistles and ragwort.

He said the approach roads into Letterkenny were considered as part of the Tidy Towns assessment and that the area had not seen grass and weed cutting during the summer.

“It’s an easy cut, and I would like to see that done,” he said.

However, the council said limited maintenance budgets meant it was not feasible to cut all the grass along the verges on the outer side of the footpath.

It said localised grass cutting would be carried out where the grass was encroaching on the footpath.

Cllr Donal Kelly said he was disappointed with the response.

"I would be somewhat nervous going forward, if the budget is that limited how are works going to be carried out in other areas of the town?" Cllr Kelly asked.
