‘A great town man’ - Tribute planned for Letterkenny stalwart Jack Boyce

By Rachel McLaughlin, Donegal Daily

A memorial bench is being sought for Ballymacool Town Park as a lasting tribute to the late Jack Boyce, a respected Letterkenny man who gave 39 years of service to Donegal County Council.

Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Cllr Pauric McGarvey, gained unanimous backing for the proposal at today’s July meeting.

Bringing forward a motion on behalf of Mr Boyce’s surviving children and grandchildren, Cllr McGarvey said Jack, of Port Road, Letterkenny, dedicated his life to the progress and development of the town.

Mr Boyce began his career in Rockhill before joining the fire brigade in Letterkenny and later taking up a role with Donegal County Council.

He served the local authority for 39 years and retired as town foreman.

Cllr McGarvey described Jack as “a great town man, highly respected and with the people’s interests at heart”.

He said Jack ensured the best possible service was delivered to the people of Letterkenny through “hard work, craic and dedication”.

The Mayor said that a bench at Ballymacool Town Park would be a fitting tribute to Jack's lifelong contribution to Letterkenny town.

He said the bench would give Jack’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends a place to visit, sit and remember “the stories and lasting memories that Jack imprinted in their lives”.

In its response, the council said a suitable location has already been identified at the park.

If a suitable source of funding is identified, the Parks Team will then arrange for the seat to be erected.
