Ten candidates to seek Cork City Council’s nomination for president
CorkmanTen candidates are coming before Cork City Council on Monday to make their plea for a nomination to contest the presidential election, including an electrician, the owner of a day care centre for dogs, a retired school teacher, a mathematics lecturer, an animal rights campaigner, and a former Lord Mayor of Cork.
The candidates are William P. Allen, Nick Delehanty, Ian Doyle, Charlie Keddy, Dr Donncha MacGabhann, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, Walter Ryan-Purcell, Dr Cora Stack, Gerben Uunk and Charlotte Keenan.
The prospective candidates will make their presentations to the city councillors in committee from 5pm on Monday before the council holds a special meeting at 7:.0pm to consider nominating a candidate. Cllr. McCarthy, as a member of Cork City Council himself, will not take part in that vote.
Eight of the ten candidates coming before Cork City Council also addressed Kerry County Council this week. Kerry councillors will vote on whether to nominate a candidate on Monday.
The same eight candidates are also due to address Tipperary County Council when it holds a special meeting next Tuesday while the other two candidates are scheduled to make presentations to Dublin City Council and Wicklow County Council.
To be eligible to run in the presidential election, candidates have to be nominated by 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities. September 24 is the last day for submitting a nomination.
