North Cork GAA club and community centre share in €45,000 funding
CorkmanTwo North Cork community groups will share almost €45,000 in funding for climate action projects, Cork County Council has announced.
Kanturk GAA club is to receive €21,000 to upgrade its heating system to an air-to-water heat pump while Kilshannig Community Centre will receive €23,369 for a solar PV installation on the premises and an upgrade of internal and external lights to L.E.D. lighting.
The successful projects were selected as part of the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP), which was developed and funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.
The programme is administered by local authorities and aims to support local organisations to build low-carbon communities.
“These projects show the significant impact that local communities can make when adequately supported. They demonstrate the dedication, resourcefulness and forward-thinking approach of communities throughout Cork County in addressing the challenges of climate change,” the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said.
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moira Murrell, added: “These projects, along with all those supported previously under the Community Climate Action Programme, illustrate the tangible outcomes that can be achieved through strong collaboration with local communities. We are committed to maintaining close engagement with these communities as we collectively pursue our climate objectives.”
TD for Cork North West, Minister Michael Moynihan, welcomed the announcement. “This funding shows how national climate goals can be transformed into real, local action. These projects will reduce energy use, cut emissions, and make community facilities more efficient and sustainable, all while supporting the vital work of our local groups," he said.
“I want to commend Kilshannig Community Centre and Kanturk GAA for taking the initiative to invest in climate-friendly upgrades. These practical projects will make a real difference both now and in the future. I look forward to continuing to support this funding and to helping more groups like these secure the resources they need to strengthen their organisations while also supporting our planet.”
