Cork city gets approval for funding for housing developments delivering over 800 homes
CorkmanA total of 823 social and cost rental homes have been approved for construction in Cork city with €300 million in government funding allocated for the two large-scale projects.
The Creamfields development on the former CMP Dairy site at the junction of Tramore Road and Kinsale Road will consist of 606 homes, of which 381 will be cost rental units and 225 will be social units.
The second development, the Railyard Apartments scheme, will be a 24-storey tower on the site of the former Sextant pub on Albert Quay and will consist of 217 apartments, of which 99 will be social units and 118 will be cost rental.
Both projects have full planning permission so it is expected that construction work can commence immediately. Cork City Council will work with the Respond and Cluid housing organisations to deliver the accommodation.
Meanwhile at Loughmahon, another 190 residential units, 99 of them cost rental and 91 of them social housing, are awaiting approval in the coming weeks, bringing the total to 1,000 new homes.
“I very much welcome that 1,000 residential units were submitted for approval to the Department of Housing. It is extremely positive news that over 800 of these have now been approved,” said Cork North Central TD Colm Burke.
“People want the opportunity to live and work in Cork city. These projects will enable those with various housing needs, such as social housing or cost rental, to do so. Furthermore, it will reduce the pressure on the waiting list for social housing in Cork City,” the Fine Gael deputy said.
He said the approval of the projects is a major step forward by the city council in meeting housing needs and he paid tribute to Cork City Council assistant chief executive Brian Geaney and his staff as well as Cluid, Respond, and the developers. “It is a testament to what is possible through collaboration at all levels,” he said.
