An Garda Síochána issues student fraud warning ahead of CAO offers - 25th august 2026
An Garda Síochána has issued a warning regarding a sharp annual spike in accommodation fraud targeting students as they prepare for college housing. Over 230 reports of rental and reservations scams have been recorded, with total losses exceeding €400,000 up to 31 July 2026. The warning also highlights the increasing use of students as 'money mules' by criminal networks. Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) advises students to use verified channels, avoid untraceable payments, and be wary of scams involving unrealistic prices, rushed decisions, or refusal to view properties. Additionally, students are warned against allowing access to their bank accounts for money laundering, which can result in serious legal consequences. The Garda encourages reporting fraud or money mule involvement to local Garda stations and banks.
