An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority and GoSafe, conducted a national speed enforcement operation – National #SlowDown Day – on Monday, 31st August 2026. Over 1,000 vehicles were detected exceeding speed limits. Notable speeds included 194km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N56, 128km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R403, 99km/h in a 60km/h zone on Navan Road, and 104km/h in a 50km/h zone on Dublin Road in Galway. The operation aimed to promote safer driving, reduce speed-related collisions, and raise awareness of the risks of excessive speed, particularly during the first week of schools reopening. This was an update on the operation.
