A youth has been released from custody after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs to her boyfriend while attending his sentencing hearing at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court on Wednesday.

It is understood she handed gardaí a bag containing confectionery, including sweets, crisps, clothing and shoes, to give to the boy, who is currently serving a sentence in Oberstown Children Detention Campus for a range of serious offences.

During a search of the items, gardaí discovered a package believed to contain drugs, namely benzodiazepines, hidden inside a packet of Tayto Waffles crisps.

She was arrested and brought to Bray Garda Station, where she was later released without charge pending a referral to the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau.

However, in a statement, gardaí said investigations are ongoing, and the suspected drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis,
