WRC rejects equality complaint against FreeNow over taxi driver’s alleged conduct

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Amit Chawla told the Workplace Relations Commission that a taxi driver refused him service and made discriminatory remarks after he booked a taxi through FreeNow at Heuston Station in Dublin. He said the driver also spat at him. These were allegations in a complaint under the Equal Status Act 2000 against Freenow Ireland Limited.

The WRC rejected the complaint. Adjudication officer Maire Mulcahy found that FreeNow had no control over the driver and that he was not acting as the company’s agent, so vicarious liability did not arise.
