WRC awards trans volunteer €5,000 over youth group discrimination
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
The Workplace Relations Commission found that a youth group discriminated against a volunteer, identified as Mr E, by excluding him from leading younger groups because of his transgender identity. Adjudication officer Orla Jones awarded him €5,000 for the effects of discrimination under the Equal Status Act 2000.
The WRC rejected Mr E’s further complaints of harassment and victimisation. It said the harassment evidence concerned negative references to his autism diagnosis, with no direct reference to his gender identity. The award took account of the organisation’s limited funding and the legal requirement for dissuasive compensation.
