WRC awards student €9,000 over discriminatory school earring rule
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
The Workplace Relations Commission ruled that a school’s requirement for ear studs to be worn in pairs indirectly discriminated against a 16-year-old male student on gender grounds. The school had treated his single ear stud as a breach of its uniform policy, which allowed one small stud in each ear.
The adjudicator also found that sanctions imposed after the student objected to the rule amounted to victimisation. The WRC ordered the school to amend its body-piercing rule to allow one or two earrings and to pay €9,000 compensation. The award is to be paid to his mother and held for him until he turns 18, with earlier use for his education at her discretion.
