WRC awards Seamus Casey €15,000 over age discrimination in pay

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Workplace Relations Commission found that the Irish Heart Foundation discriminated against Seamus Casey under equal pay provisions, after paying him a lower hourly rate for like work without objective justification. It ordered the charity to pay him €1,363.12 in salary arrears and €15,000 in compensation, taking account of €4,453.60 already paid as back pay.

The adjudicator rejected Casey’s claim that his retirement amounted to discriminatory dismissal. She found that he knew he was being offered a final fixed-term contract and signed it. The decision therefore upheld the pay discrimination complaint while rejecting the dismissal complaint.
