WRC adjourns skippers’ employment status cases for review

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Workplace Relations Commission adjourned the claims by Peter Cullen and Roy Jackson against Dún Laoghaire Powerboat School Ltd after a preliminary hearing on whether the skippers were employees entitled to pursue employment rights claims. The company argued they worked under contracts as sole traders or a company and were paid against invoices; their representative disputed that account.

Adjudication officer Patricia Owens said she would review the documents and submissions before deciding their employment status. She said the matter would either reconvene in the New Year or close based on her findings. No determination had been made at the time of the report.
