William McAteer and co-accused John Bowe, Denis Casey and Peter Fitzpatrick appeared at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 10 July 2014 on charges of conspiring to mislead Anglo Irish Bank’s investors about the true value of its deposit books. Their trial was scheduled for 11 January 2016.
The alleged conspiracy involved transferring €7.2 billion between March and September 2008 to make the bank appear more valuable. William McAteer and John Bowe each also faced one additional charge of falsifying accounts, contrary to section 10 of the Theft and Fraud Act.
The court heard that the case was very complex, with substantial disclosure issues still to be dealt with. Judge Mary Ellen Ring initially suggested a trial date in late 2015 before agreeing to January 2016.
Judge Mary Ellen Ring listed the matter for 24 November 2014 to address disclosure issues. She also granted a defence application excusing all four men from court dates until their trial.
The proceedings were reported on 11 July 2014.
