A Wicklow man accused of attacking another man with a hammer and glass bottle, leaving him with “catastrophic injuries” has been granted bail.

Brandon Breen (23), of Mitchell Close, Arklow, Co Wicklow, appeared at an August sitting of Bray District Court charged with one count of assault causing harm.

It is alleged that on June 4, Mr Breen attacked the complainant at his home address with a hammer and glass bottle, leaving him with “catastrophic injuries” that may be “life-altering”.

The court was previously told that the complainant now has a steel plate in his head and was previously at risk of losing an eye.

At a previous sitting, the matter was marked peremptory against the State as they were still awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

On Wednesday, August 14, the court heard that previously Judge David Kennedy had noted that if directions were not available, he would consider granting the accused bail.

Sergeant Mick Dee stated that the file had been sent to State Solicitor for Wicklow’ Brian Robinson, but was unaware if directions had been received yet.

He added that he would still be objecting to bail due to the seriousness of the offence, but accepted that it was Judge Kennedy’s direction.

Judge Derek Cooney granted Mr Breen bail on the condition that he must sign on every day at Arklow Garda Station.

However, the judge warned Mr Breen to have no contact with the complainant, “not even by messenger pigeon”, and that he must live at his mother’s home address.
