The Wicklow PeopleA Wicklow man has pleaded guilty to possessing more than €13,000 worth of cannabis for the purpose of sale or supply
Liam McCarthy (46), of Oaklands, Arklow, Co Wicklow, was arraigned at a sitting of Wicklow Circuit Court, where he entered a guilty plea to one count of possession of a controlled drug for the purpose of supplying another, contrary to Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
The court heard that on May 10 last year, Mr McCarthy was found in possession of cannabis with a street value of more than €13,000 at his home address. The drugs were held for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying them to another.
Mr McCarthy entered a guilty plea at the earliest possible opportunity.
The court was told that the accused suffers from various forms of addiction and spent three months in a residential drug rehabilitation programme in August 2025.
Counsel for the accused said his client is currently experiencing difficulties accessing services to provide a urine analysis to demonstrate to the court that he remains drug-free.
Judge Patrick Quinn directed that a probation and welfare report be prepared. The matter was adjourned for what the court described as a “longer than usual adjournment”.
Counsel for Mr McCarthy also made an application to extend legal aid for the preparation of a psychological report.
Judge Quinn refused the application at this stage, noting that the motion could be renewed at the next sitting on April 14.
Mr McCarthy is due to appear before Wicklow Circuit Court on April 14 to fix a date for sentencing. His appearance on that date has been excused.
