A 47-year-old man has been banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Philip Doyle (47) of Duncles, Tinakilly, Aughrim, Co. Wicklow was charged at Arklow District Court with driving, or attempting to drive an MPV while exceeding the alcohol limit. The incident occurred on April 1, 2025.

The court heard that during the incident, Mr Doyle crashed his vehicle into the central reservation of the M11 at Ballyruane in Arklow. When gardaí arrived, they noticed a strong smell of alcohol from the defendant. A subsequent breath test showed a reading of 77 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

The court heard that Mr Doyle had one previous conviction for manslaughter and had served 14 years in prison, part of which was suspended. The suspended portion was not activated as the time period had already passed. The court heard that Mr Doyle had no road traffic related convictions.

Mr Doyle’s solicitor told the court that his client was a qualified painter and decorator and is currently seeking work. During the time of the incident Mr Doyle was sleeping in his vehicle and was having issues with his then partner. His solicitor told the court that his client was dealing with an addiction to alcohol.

Judge David Kennedy reminded Mr Doyle that other drivers are on the motorway, and he is “extremely lucky”. Mr Doyle pleaded guilty and Judge Kennedy handed down a three-year driving ban and a fine for €500.
