A Wexford man who sent a threatening email to a local councillor during an election campaign has been fined at Gorey District Court.

The court heard that on March 17, 2024, Fine Gael councillor Kazi Ahmed of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council received a threatening email while campaigning for re-election in the 2024 local elections.

The email stated “if you dare run in the general election I will murder you and your family leave Ireland now filthy Muslim swine”.

The sender’s email address was traced back to Andrew Moody (27) of 15 Glentire Heights, The Ballagh, Wexford.

Donna Kelly BL, counsel for the accused, informed the court that at the time Moody had received an autism diagnosis and was also struggling with depression which had caused him to turn to alcohol and cannabis as a form of self medication.

The barrister stated the defendant is embarrassed and apologetic for his actions but does not wish to underplay the severity of the situation.

The Judge imposed a €250 fine with five months to pay.
