A two-year civil restraining order has been granted between a mother and her adult son, with a judge describing the case as “a sad situation” before Wexford District Court.

A man, in his 20s, informed the court that he was seeking a restraining order against his mother in circumstances where she was shouting at him in the streets, had thrown a football at a front window of his home, and had sent him a card which was said to be threatening.

The man stated that he had gone into the care of TUSLA when he was in his teenage years, describing the woman as “neglectful”, and stated that he wants no contact with her.

The woman explained that during her son’s teenage years she was in a violent relationship which was witnessed by him. Over time she had reconnected with that partner but things have since ended with the woman saying the “problem has gone away”.

The woman went on to say that she can be a reactive person and at the time of the incidents she was concerned for the well-being of her son who she stated had pulled away from other family members.

On a visit to his home the woman noted there was “explicit pornographic material” displayed in his bedroom window, which caused her to write the card as she had reacted to the “exposure of females” displayed. The man denied this and said that he had teddy bears and flags in his window.

Judge Kevin Staunton granted the civil restraining order for a period of 2 years commenting that it is a sad situation but the son is an adult who does not wish to have any contact with the woman and she needs to respect that, which he does not think the woman is capable of doing.

The judge added that mediation between the parties could be of some help and that there could be a coming together in the future but any potential reconciliation would have to wait until the order is expired.
