A Wexford man accused of stealing an electric bike and carrying out a burglary at an apartment block has been denied bail after a judge said he was not satisfied the accused would comply with any conditions imposed by the court.

Detective Garda Declan Mulqueen gave evidence to the court that a report was received of the unauthorised taking of an electric bike, its charger, and a pair of runners from the apartment block of the injured party on May 6.

The accused, Christopher Connors (43) of 8 Walnut Grove, Wexford, was said to have gained entry to the apartment block from the door and took the bike worth approximately €1,000, and charger from the hallway.

Connors then took a pair of New Balance runners to the value of €150 from outside an apartment door.

There was also €30 worth of damage done to the lock of the bike in the course of Connors removing it.

Det Gda Mulqueen said CCTV footage from the apartment block was reviewed by gardaí, who identified the accused as Christopher “Christy” Connors.

On the same date Connors was said to have entered Mr Price, Trinity Wharf, Wexford, and taken soft drinks to the value of €4. When charged the accused replied “I want to see me taking the drinks I took no drinks”.

Det Gda Mulqueen informed the court that Connors would be a known heroin addict who had been recently released from custody.

Nicholas Reville BL, instructed by Tim Cummings solicitor, stated that Connors was attending a methadone clinic receiving 30ml of methadone. The barrister stated that Connors had been free of all other substances until the passing of a friend recently which prompted Connors to purchase tablets.

Judge Cheatle was of the view the accused “would not behave himself” no matter the conditions imposed and denied bail.

The case was adjourned to May 14 for directions to be given from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
