A number of matters including an assault on a garda, drugs possession, public order offences and several uninsured driving cases were dealt with at Wexford District Court recently before Judge John Cheatle.

A Wexford man was given four months imprisonment in connection with assaulting a member of An Garda Síochána.

Garda Tadgh Moran gave evidence that on January 27 2025 gardaí received calls to attend at 125 Mount Prospect, Wexford, the home of John Nash (39). When gardaí arrived Nash was outside the house and appeared agitated and intoxicated.

Nash attempted to push past gardaí and enter the house when he was stopped by Garda Moran. The accused then grabbed the shirt of the garda and an altercation ensued, resulting in Nash striking Garda Moran.

The court was informed that Nash has 66 previous convictions, with the most recent coming from a district court appeal at Wexford Circuit Court in connection with a dangerous driving offence.

The accused is currently serving a prison sentence with a release date of November 2026.

Andrew Bolger BL, counsel for the accused, stated that while in custody Nash is attending various classes, as well as AA meetings, and is doing well.

Judge Cheatle imposed a four month sentence to run concurrently with the existing sentence.

A Wexford man was before the court in relation to an offence of possession of drugs on August 24 2025 at Wexford General Hospital, Newtown Road, Wexford.

The court heard that James Mooney (50) of Silverbirch, Wexford, was a patient in the hospital when nurses discovered cannabis worth €200 in his bedside locker and alerted gardai.

Judge Cheatle ordered that Mooney enter into a bond to keep the peace for a duration of 10 months.

Probation Act for public order offence

A man entered a plea of guilty to a public order offence which occurred on May 14 2025 at Redmonds Square, Wexford.

Evidence was given to the court that on the day in question ambulance services arrived at the scene to treat Myles Connors (62) of 3 Sean Macbride Square, King Street, Wexford, who became aggressive and uncooperative with the paramedics, and also with members of An Garda Síochána.

Róisín O’Mara, instructed by King and Company Solicitors, informed the court that Connors had previously suffered a stroke and can become reactive at times, particularly when alcohol is involved.

Judge Cheatle applied section 1(1) of the Probation Act.
